How to find Those Unwanted Items in Your Home to Raise Cash NOW …
Have you been meaning to de-clutter your home for a while but just don’t know where to start, or perhaps you have plenty of storage space and the house itself is clutter free, but the cupboards are full of unused items!
Here are 10 places you can start to look for hidden clutter that could raise you money for your next holiday, honeymoon, new car, hobbies, or simply for a good night out:
- Under beds. These spaces can get pretty scary. If you are like I was, I am sure you may have squeezed something under the bed, in a hurry thinking no one will be able to see it, only to forget that you did just that!
- Closets. If you’re like most English people, you have sheets, towels, board games, coats, scarves, umbrellas, scrap-book supplies, exercise videos, outdated spices, shoes, empty boxes, and hundreds of other items that you never use cluttering up your closets. Now is a great time to get rid of some of these outdated items.
- Your basement/attic . Spiders aren’t the only things lurking in your basement or attic! Holiday decorations, boxes you never unpacked from your last move, and electronics that you convinced yourself you will one day clear some space in the house to assemble!
- Self-storage facilities. I was a prime example of this one! With no more room left in the cupboards I arranged a self storage container, only to end up buying more clothes, electronic goods etc, forgetting I already had exactly the same items in storage. Now is a good a time as any to review the items in storage that you have simply collected over the years.
- Garages. Is there a pair of Rollerblades somewhere in your garage? Was 1998 the last time you wore them? Unused sports equipment, camping gear, and things that didn’t sell the last time you tried to sell them yourself don’t belong in your garage. Wouldn’t it be nice next winter to actually be able to park your car inside your garage?
- High cupboards in the kitchen. Bread makers, popcorn poppers, china, silver, and griddles have a way of making it into your kitchen, never to be seen again. Either use what you own or get rid of it and make some money!
- Guest rooms. I have a relation, who will remain nameless for obvious reasons, who has two “guest rooms” in her home. One has a bed, dresser, and empty closet. The other is filled with boxes and boxes of every piece of clothing her children have ever worn and every toy they have ever owned. Her children are married and live in their own homes. Yet, my relation continues to keep her children’s things and will not reclaim her guest room. If you have a guest room hiding things that you do not need, think about my friend and how you don’t want to end up like her.
- Desk drawers and filing cabinets. Your desk is a place that should facilitate productivity, creativity, and work. None of these things can happen if your desk is a disaster. If you’re having trouble opening your desk drawers, take a deep breath, disconnect the phone and the internet for a few hours, and focus on clearing the clutter from your work space.
- Your car’s glove box and armrest. As far as I am aware, there is not a competition to see how much stuff you can cram inside your glove box!
- The garden shed. Wow, the stuff I’ve seen ‘hidden’, neglected, forgotten or even ‘lost’ in garden sheds and outbuildings is nothing short of amazing! One of my in-laws had a total of 3 lawn mowers that had been collected when he lived in a house with a large garden. Now in a retirement flat with a small garden he didn’t really need any of them. Each one was worth a minimum of £50 and taking valuable space.
How To De-clutter Your Home
Taking 15 minutes each day to de-clutter an area and clearing your hotspots are among some of the most powerful tools you can use to create a more peaceful home. Remember: You cannot organise clutter - you can only organise the things you love!
I've included my tips on how to de-clutter. Put your home on a diet!
- When to De-clutter: Decide how often you are going to de-clutter a zone. Do a little every day - use a timer if necessary.
- De-cluttering Equipment: We suggest you use some big bin liners, boxes, magic markers, and a dust cloth. Label the boxes "Give Away", "Throw Away", "Put Away" and “Cash It In For Me”. Line the "Throw Away" box with a plastic bin bag.
- Set your timer: for 1 hour (or 30, 15, or 10 minutes - it doesn't matter how long). Just do the job as fast as you can and do not pull out more stuff than you can put away in that length of time. This means just one drawer, one closet (or even one shelf in one closet), one magazine rack, or digging under just the furniture in the zone. Not all of them at once!
- Start at the entrance to the room: Then, work your way around the room clockwise. Do not skip a spot. Whatever happens to be next, just do it.
- De-clutter Away! With boxes at your feet and a dust cloth in your waistband, start off by cleaning out and getting rid of the things that do not belong in this room. Put things you want to sell in the “Cash It In For Me” box, rubbish in the "Throw Away" box, donations in the "Give Away" box, and stuff that goes somewhere else in the "Put Away" box. Don't worry that you do not have a place for everything right now. By the time you finish you will.
- What to de-clutter? Things to ask yourself as you get rid of your clutter:
- Do I love this item?
- Have I used it in the past year?
- Is it really rubbish?
- Do I have another one that is better?
- Should I really keep two?
- Does it have sentimental value that causes me to love it?
- Or does it give me guilt and make me sad when I see the item?
Cleanse this room of everything that does not make you SMILE.
- Get rid of the rubbish! When the "Throw Away" box gets full, pull out the rubbish bag, close it, and put it in the bin, or wherever you keep your rubbish. Put a new bin bag in the "Throw Away" box.
- “Cash It In For Me” box: Fill it with items you think will fetch over £25 each – you’ll soon be amazed by how much value you’ll have built!
- Donations: When the "Give Away" box gets full, seal it off, and put it in your car. The next time you are out, you can donate it to the local charity shop. Do not save your clutter for a day that’ll never arrive! Remember you are trying to get rid of clutter - not relocate it somewhere else in your home. Now, grab another box, label it "Give Away", and get back to work.
- "Put Away" Stuff: When the "Put Away" box gets full, take the box in your arms and run around the house and put the items in the room where they belong. If they have a place, put them there, if not put them in the room where they logically belong. By the time you have finished you will have a place for everything.
- Timer Goes Off: When the timer goes off, put away all the boxes, until the next day, when you can continue with the good job you have been doing.
- Finished! Congratulations, you have now finished de-cluttering your home and are ready to contact your local Cash It In For Me Operator.
